The so-called "Hole of Bremen" is a popular tourist attraction on Bremen's market square. Hidden beneath a bronze manhole cover, surrounded by the historic town hall, Roland statue, Bremen Cathedral and the city parliament, is a unique underground donation box. As soon as passers-by throw a coin into the coin slot, the "hole" emits the crowing, barking, meowing and whining of the world-famous Bremen Town Musicians.
So that the voices of the donkey, dog, cat or rooster can also be heard after inserting a coin, a small pro bono control project by our colleagues from the systems engineering department is hidden behind the coin slot. After the control mechanism recently failed due to vandalism and the Bremen Town Musicians fell silent for the time being, our OAS colleagues have now gone on a "special mission" to give the Town Musicians their voices back.
So, next time you visit Bremen's city center, quickly dig out a few coins and make the Town Musicians sing.
Incidentally, the initiator of the Hole of Bremen is the Wilhelm Kaisen Bürgerhilfe. It uses the money raised to support selected charitable projects and organizations in Bremen. Last year, over 24,000 euros were raised for a good cause.
